چکیده
This study aimed to compare the morphological characteristics of northern Caucasian bleak (Alburnus hohenackeri) populations in the Caspian basin using geometric morphometrics. Geometric morphometrics in fishes examines the changes in their appearance among different groups or under different environmental conditions by using anatomical reference points on their body. The data encompassed 487 fish samples from the Caspian Basin, including the Aras, Shalmanrud, Mazoboon, Noor, Sorkhrud, Goharrud, Kaparbordrud 1, Kaparbordrud 2, Gorganrud 1, Gorganrud 2, Lamir, and Hajibakandeh rivers. Photographs were taken from the left side of the lateral surface of these samples, and then 13 landmarks were digitized using tpsDig2 software. The data obtained from Procrustes analysis were analyzed with multivariate statistical methods such as PCA, CVA, and cluster analysis. The comparison of geometric morphometrics revealed a significant difference between the Aras River population and the other populations. The main differences were related to the shape of the body, the size and shape of the head, the position of the mouth, the position of the fins, the height of the body, and the length of the tail stem. This difference between the Aras River population and other rivers may be due to variations in habitat and geographical separation. Alternatively, it is possible that the observed differences indicate distinct species. On the other hand, the other populations overlapped with each other, and no significant difference was observed between them. This similarity in morphometrics could be attributed to similar habitat conditions.

Introduction
The Caucasian bleak (Alburnus hohenackeri), belonging to the Leuciscidae family, is commonly found among aquatic plants in the lower parts of rivers and freshwater lakes. It can tolerate brackish water to some extent and is most abundant in river estuaries. This species inhabits all ecosystems of the Caspian Sea, although human activities have inadvertently introduced it to other water bodies like Zarivar, Maraveh, Hamun, and Sistan. Habitat and river differences significantly impact fish species, making morphological studies of Caucasian sprat across various rivers and water bodies important.
Morphological characteristics are essential for differentiating populations within a species and can provide insights into evolution, behavior, conservation, and resource utilization (Nacua et al. 2010; Su et al. 2019). The geometric morphometric method based on landmarks is widely applicable in biological studies and is effective in analyzing morphological changes over time and space (Klingenberg 2017; Adams et al. 2004). This method allows for comparisons between biological forms based on landmark coordinates, which can be visualized in a deformation network.
Understanding fish in aquatic ecosystems is crucial from ecological, behavioral, evolutionary, and resource management perspectives (Razavipoor et al. 2014). The primary aim of this study is to investigate the geometric morphological differences of Caucasian sprat within the Caspian Sea basin, which is the largest lake globally, housing around 115 fish species, including economically and ecologically significant species like sturgeon, mullet, carp, and trout (Ghojoghi et al. 2018).
 
Materials and Methods
In this study, 487 specimens of Caucasian sprat (from a total of 12 populations across 12 rivers) were collected from the Caspian Sea basin between 2009 and 2010. The identification was based on the 2020 checklist (Jouladeh-Roudbar et al. 2020). The fish studied were not mature, making sex determination impossible; therefore, they were analyzed as a mixed group. However, the samples were sufficiently grown for identification. Some samples were excluded from the study due to inadequate growth for identification, and only recognizable specimens were included. The fish mature at a size of 12 cm, while the specimens studied ranged from 8 to 11 cm.
After selecting the target rivers for sampling, Caucasian sprat specimens were captured using a seine net and an electrofishing device. The samples were then fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin and transferred to the Ichthyology Laboratory of the Faculty of Natural Resources at Isfahan University of Technology, where they were preserved in 70% alcohol.
Geometric morphometric data were extracted using a 14-megapixel Canon digital camera (made in Japan). Landmarks were placed on the images using TpsDig2 software (version 2.10). Morphometric data for the studied species were compared using Tps series software (version 2). Procrustes analysis was used to eliminate non-shape variations, followed by analysis using PAST software (version 2.17). The average shape changes of populations were derived from the overall mean shape. Geometric morphometric data were analyzed using principal component analysis and canonical variable analysis. Figure 2 illustrates a fish sample for landmark determination.
 
Research Findings
The results of principal component analysis (PCA) indicated that the first three components were selected as the main factors distinguishing the populations, accounting for approximately 53% of the total variance. The distribution of the studied populations and changes in body shape along the first two principal components were analyzed.
The analysis revealed that eleven populations overlapped, indicating no significant differences among them. However, the Aras River population did not overlap with the others, showing significant differences. Changes in body shape patterns indicated that movement in the positive direction of the first principal component was associated with alterations in mouth position, shifts in eye positions, and significant changes in dorsal fin positions, pelvic and anal fin positions, as well as increases in body height and caudal peduncle length.
In the positive direction of the second principal component, similar changes were observed, including downward movement of the mouth, shifts in the head end position, alterations in dorsal and anal fin positions, and increases in body height and caudal peduncle length.
Canonical correlation analysis demonstrated that nearly all populations overlapped with no significant differences, except for the Aras River population, which was distinct from the others. Cluster analysis indicated that the Aras River population formed a separate branch, showing the greatest distinction from other populations. Two main groups emerged: one including the Aras River and another with the remaining populations. Within the second group, the Marzbon population was notably distinct, while the pairs of populations Golestanrud1 and Haji-Bakandeh, as well as Koper-Bardrud1 and Noor, were identified as sister populations with minimal distance between them.
 
Discussion of Results & Conclusion
Fish populations in different habitats exhibit distinct forms due to environmental conditions. Among vertebrates, fish show a high degree of morphological diversity and sensitivity to environmental changes (Mouludi-Saleh et al. 2018). While shape variations were once thought to be primarily genetic, it is now recognized that environmental factors play a crucial role.
Numerous studies have demonstrated that body shape correlates with specific environmental conditions, leading to notable adaptations. For instance, research in the southern Caspian Sea basin identified traits such as head size, body depth, and fin positions as key factors distinguishing fish populations (Mouludi-Saleh & Keivany 2019). Similarly, studies on narrow-nosed mullet and stream catfish revealed significant morphological variations influenced by their habitats (Abassi et al. 2023a; Sharifinia & Mousavi 2016).
Morphological changes are significant when linked to functional aspects, such as foraging behavior and movement efficiency in aquatic ecosystems (Abassi et al. 2023b). For example, a downward mouth position in the Aras population may indicate feeding from deeper waters, while reduced body height may aid in navigating currents (Hawkins & Quinn 1996).
Overall, the evolutionary changes leading to morphological differences in the Aras population appear to be influenced by habitat characteristics and geographical isolation. The distinct shape of the Aras population likely relates to its dietary habits and environmental adaptations, impacting its feeding success and predator avoidance (Langerhans et al. 2003).

مقدمه

مرواریدماهی قفقازی (Alburnus hohenackeri) از خانواده Leuciscidae است و در لا‌به‌لای گیاهان آبزی قسمت‌های پایینی رودخانه‌ها و دریاچه‌های آب شیرین به فراوانی دیده می‌شود. آب لب شور را نیز تا حدی تحمل می‌کند و بیشترین فراوانی را در ناحیه مصب رودخانه‌ها دارد. مرواریدماهی قفقازی در تمام زیستگاه‌های دریای خزر به سر می‌برد؛ اما ناخواسته انسان آن را به برخی حوضه‌های آبی دیگر مانند زریوار، مراوین، هامون و سیستان منتقل کرده است. تفاوت زیستگاه و رودخانه می‌تواند تأثیر بسزایی بر گونه‌های ماهی داشته باشد؛ بنابراین، بررسی ریخت‌شناسی مروارید‌ماهی قفقازی در رودخانه‌ها و حوضه‌های آبی مختلف حایز اهمیت است. برای تفکیک جمعیت‌‌های مختلف از یک گونه، روش‌های متفاوتی وجود دارد. بررسی ویژگی‌های ریخت‌شناسی، یکی از مهم‌ترین روش‌های مورد استفاده در این زمینه است. بررسی خصوصیات ریختی ماهیان کمک می‌کند تا موضوعاتی همچون تکامل، رفتارشناسی، حفاظت و بهره‌برداری از منابع آبزی بیشتر شایان توجه قرار گیرد (Nacua et al., 2010). این خصوصیات اطلاعات مفیدی در مورد پراکنش گونه‌ها، وضعیت بوم‌شناختی و همچنین، الگوی تغذیه‌ای آنها ارائه می‌دهد (Su et al., 2019). تمایز بین جمعیت‌های ماهیان با استفاده از صفات ریخت‌شناسی می‌تواند نشان‌دهنده ماهیت انتخاب طبیعی و تأثیر عوامل محیطی باشد (Gammanpila et al., 2017). ویژگی‌های ریخت‌شناسی ماهیان اغلب دچار تغییرات درون‌گونه‌ای و بین‌گونه‌ای می‌شود؛ زیرا این خصوصیات متأثر از عامل‌های محیطی است (Costa & Cataudella, 2007)؛ بنابراین، در برخی موارد، تفاوت‌های ریخت‌شناسی ناشی از ویژگی‌های محیطی هستند و ژنتیک نقش چندانی در این زمینه ندارد.

روش ریخت‌سنجی هندسی بر پایه لندمارک دارای قابلیت وسیعی در مطالعات زیستی است (Abbasi et al., 2023a). این روش به‌طور موفقیت‌آمیزی در مطالعات ریخت‌شناسی استفاده می‌شود (Klingenberg, 2017) .ریخت‌سنجی هندسی در مطالعات بوم‌شناسی، جغرافیای زیستی، رده‌بندی، انعطاف‌پذیری ریختی و تکامل منجر به گونه‌زایی، به‌طور گسترده برای درک تغییرات فرم در فضا و زمان در طول تکامل، ارتباط ژنتیکی و تأثیر عامل‌های زیست‌محیطی استفاده شده است (Cardini, 2016). این ابزار، مقایسه بین فرم‌های زیستی را براساس مختصات نقاط لندمارک‌ها امکان‌پذیر می‌سازد. به‌طور معمول، در مطالعات ریخت‌سنجی سنتی واکاوی‌های آماری چندمتغیره برای بررسی مجموعه‌ای از داده‌های فاصله‌ای ازقبیل طول، عرض و ارتفاع به کار برده می‌شود؛ ولی در روش ریخت‌سنجی هندسی، داده‌های حاصل، مختصات لندمارک‌هاست که برای استخراج داده‌های شکلی استفاده می‌شوند (Khoshnamvand et al., 2019). این داده‌های شکلی می‌توانند در یک شبکه تغییر شکل، مصورسازی شوند (Adams et al., 2004). بررسی ماهیان در زیست‌بوم‌های آبی از جهت‌های مختلف مانند بوم‌شناسی، رفتار‌شناسی، تکامل، مدیریت و ارزیابی ذخایر بسیار حائز اهمیت است (Razavipoor et al., 2014). محققان گونه‌های مختلف ماهیان را به واسطه ویژگی‌های ریخت‌شناسی ارزیابی و شناسایی می‌شوند. ویژگی‌های ریخت‌شناسی اطلاعات مفید و سودمندی ازنظر ویژگی‌های محیطی و بوم‌شناختی در اختیار محققین قرار می‌دهد. ویژگی ریختی ماهیان تحت تأثیر شرایط محیطی مانند نوع بستر، جریان آب، پوشش گیاهی، رقابت و میزان دسترسی به منابع غذایی قرار دارد (Bajic et al., 2018). یکی از مباحث مهم در علوم زیستی، بررسی جمعیت‌ها و چگونگی تفکیک آنها از یکدیگر است (Keyvani et al., 2016). با توجه به اهمیت موضوع ریخت‌شناسی در زیست‌بوم‌های مختلف، هدف اصلی در این مقاله بررسی تفاوت‌های ریخت‌شناسی هندسی مرواریدماهی قفقازی (A. hohenackeri) در درون حوضه‌ خزر است. دریای خزر با وسعت بیش از 3 میلیون کیلومتر مربع بزرگ‌ترین دریاچه جهان محسوب می‌شود. این دریاچه دارای ماهیان با ارزش اقتصادی و اکولوژیکی بی‌نظیری است. حدود 115 گونه و زیر گونه از ماهیان مختلف در این حوزه آبی زندگی می‌کنند. از مهم‌ترین ماهیان استخوانی در این حوزه آبی می‌توان به ماهی سفید، کفال، کپور، مروارید ماهی، و قزل آلا اشاره کرد (Ghojoghi et al., 2018)

 

مواد و روش‌ها

در این مطالعه از تعداد 487 قطعه ماهی مرواریدماهی قفقازی (درمجموع 12 جمعیت از 12 رودخانه) استفاده شده است که از حوضه خزر در طی سال‌های 1388 تا 1389 صید شده‌اند. این ماهی با استفاده از چک‌لیست سال 2020 (Jouladeh-Roudbar et al., 2020) شناسایی شده است. ماهی‌های مورد مطالعه در این پژوهش بالغ نبوده‌اند و امکان تعیین جنسیت برای آنها وجود نداشت؛ به همین علت به‌صورت مخلوط آنالیز شده‌اند؛ اما باید توجه داشت نمونه‌ها به اندازه‌ای رشد کرده بودند که قابل شناسایی باشند. در میان نمونه‌های موجود برخی از نمونه‌ها به دلیل اینکه به قدر کافی رشد نکرده بودند و قابل شناسایی نبودند، از مطالعه خارج شدند و فقط نمونه‌های قابل شناسایی مطالعه شده‌اند. ماهی‌ها در اندازه 12 سانتی‌متر بالغ می‌شوند. ماهی‌های مورد مطالعه در اندازه‌های بین 8 تا 11 سانتی‌متر هستند. بعد از تعیین رودخانه‌های مدنظر برای صید نمونه با استفاده از تورپره و دستگاه الکترو شوکر، تعدادی نمونه مرواریدماهی قفقازی صید شدند. سپس این نمونه‌ها در فرمالین 10% خنثی بافری تثبیت و برای ادامه آزمایش‌ها به آزمایشگاه ماهی‌شناسی دانشکده منابع طبیعی دانشگاه صنعتی اصفهان، منتقل و در الکل 70% نگهداری شدند. نقشه نقاط جغرافیایی در شکل 1 نشان داده شده است. همچنین، مختصات نقاط نمونه‌برداری در

جدول 1 آورده شده است. برای استخراج داده‌های ریخت‌سنجی از روش ریخت‌سنجی هندسی استفاده شد. برای این کار با استفاده از دوربین دیجیتال 14 مگاپیکسل کنن (ساخت کشور ژاپن) از نمونه‌ها عکس گرفته و سپس لندمارک‌های تعیین‌شده با نرم‌افزار TpsDig2 (version 2.10) روی این عکس‌ها قرار داده شد. داده‌های ریخت‌سنجی گونه‌های مورد مطالعه برای مقایسه ویژگی‌های ریختی با استفاده از نرم‌افزارهای Tps series (version 2) استخراج شد. نمونه‌ها با استفاده از آنالیز پروکراست برای حذف تغییرات غیر شکل صورت پذیرفت. سپس با استفاده از نرم‌افزار PAST (version 2.17) تحلیل شد. میانگین تغییرات شکل بدن جمعیت‌ها از شکل میانگین کل صورت پذیرفت. داده‌های ریخت‌سنجی هندسی با آزمون‌های آماری آنالیز مؤلفه اصلی و تحلیل متغیرهای کانونی تحلیل شدند. در شکل 2 یک نمونه ماهی برای تعیین لندمارک نشان داده شده است.

نتایج

مطابق نتایج تجزیه به مؤلفه‌های اصلی، سه مؤلفه اول بالاتر از خط برش جولیف، به‌عنوان عوامل اصلی تفکیک‌کننده جمعیت‌ها انتخاب شدند (شکل 3) و این سه مؤلفه درمجموع حدود 53٪ واریانس را به خود اختصاص دادند (

 

 

جدول ). نحوه توزیع جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه و تغییرات شکل بدنی جمعیت‌ها در راستای دو محور PC1 و PC2 در نمودار تجزیه به مؤلفه‌های اصلی بر اساس دو مؤلفه اول و دوم به ترتیب در شکل 4 نشان داده شده است.

مطابق شکل 4، یازده جمعیت دارای هم‌پوشانی با یکدیگرند و تفاوت معنی‌داری بین آنها دیده نمی‌شود؛ اما جمعیت رودخانه ارس با دیگر جمعیت‌ها هم‌پوشانی ندارد و تفاوت معنی‌داری بین جمعیت رودخانه ارس با دیگر جمعیت‌ها دیده می‌شود. در بررسی تغییرات الگوهای شکل بدنی جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه، مطابق شکل 5، با حرکت در جهت مثبت محور PC1 شکل بدنی جمعیت‌ها تمایل به تغییر موقعیت دهان و به عقب‌رفتن آن (لندمارک 1)، تغییر در موقعیت ابتدا و انتهای چشم (لندمارک‌های 2 و 3)، تغییر مشخص در موقعیت باله‌های پشتی (لندمارک‌‌های 7 و 8)، تغییر در موقعیت باله شکمی (لندمارک 9)، تغییر در موقعیت باله مخرجی (لندمارک‌های 10 و 11)، افزایش ارتفاع بدن (لندمارک‌‌های 7، 8، 10 و 11) و افزایش طول ساقه دمی (لندمارک‌های 12و13) دارند. همچنین، با حرکت در جهت مثبت محور PC2 شکل بدن جمعیت‌ها تمایل به تغییر موقعیت دهان و پایین‌رفتن آن (لندمارک 1)، تغییر در موقعیت انتهای سر (لندمارک 4)، تغییر در موقعیت باله‌های پشتی (لندمارک‌های 7 و 8)، تغییر در موقعیت باله مخرجی (لندمارک‌های 10 و 11)، افزایش ارتفاع بدن (لندمارک‌های 7، 8، 10 و 11) و افزایش طول ساقه دمی (لندمارک‌های 12 و 13) دارند.

تحلیل همبستگی کانونی نشان داد تقریباً همه جمعیت‌ها با یکدیگر هم‌پوشانی دارند و تفاوت معناداری بین آنها دیده نمی‌شود؛ اما جمعیت رودخانه ارس با هیچ‌کدام از جمعیت‌ها هم‌پوشانی ندارد؛ بنابراین، تفاوت معناداری بین جمعیت رودخانه ارس و دیگر جمعیت‌ها وجود دارد (شکل 6). همچنین، در شکل 7 تغییرات شکل بدنی جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه ارائه شده است. با توجه به شکل 6، با حرکت در جهت مثبت محور CV1 شکل بدنی جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه تمایل به تغییر موقعیت باله پشتی (لندمارک‌های 7 و 8)، تغییر موقعیت باله شکمی (لندمارک 9) و تغییر موقعیت باله مخرجی (لندمارک‌های 10 و 11)، کاهش ارتفاع بدن (لندمارک‌های 7، 8، 10 و 11) و کاهش طول ساقه دمی (لندمارک‌های 12 و 13) دارند و با حرکت در جهت مثبت محور CV2 شکل بدن جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه تمایل به تغییر موقعیت دهان و به عقب‌رفتن آن (لندمارک 1)، تغییر موقعیت ابتدای چشم (لندمارک 2)، تغییر موقعیت باله سینه‌ای (لندمارک‌ 6)، تغییر موقعیت باله مخرجی (لندمارک‌های 10 و 11)، افزایش ارتفاع بدن (لندمارک‌های 7، 8، 10 و 11) و افزایش ساقه دمی (لندمارک‌های 12 و 13) دارند.

در شکل 8 تحلیل خوشه‌ای جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه ارائه شده است. ضریب کوپرنیک تحلیل خوشه‌ای برابر با 95/0 محاسبه شد. مطابق با تحلیل خوشه‌ای جمعیت‌های مرواریدماهی قفقازی در حوضه خزر، جمعیت رودخانه ارس در شاخه جداگانه قرار گرفته است و بیشترین تمایز را با سایر جمعیت‌ها دارد. طبق این تحلیل، دو گروه اصلی مشاهده می‌شود. گروه اول شامل ارس و گروه دیگر شامل دیگر جمعیت‌ها. در ضمن گروه دیگر، جمعیت مرزبون از دیگر جمعیت‌ها جدا افتاده است. باید اشاره کرد جفت جمعیت‌های گرگانرود 1 و حاجی‌بکنده، و جفت جمعیت‌های کپربردرود 1 و نور جمعیت‌های خواهری هستند که کمترین فاصله را با یکدیگر دارند.

بحث

جمعیت ماهیان ساکن در زیستگاه‌های مختلف به دلیل تأثیر شرایط و عوامل محیطی می‌توانند اشکال متمایزی از خود نشان دهند. در میان مهره‌داران، ماهی‌ها درجه بالاتری از تنوع ریختی درون‌گونه‌ای و بین‌گونه‌ای را نشان می‌دهند و همچنین، حساسیت بیشتری به تغییرات محیطی نشان می‌دهند (Mouludi-Saleh et al., 2018)؛ در حالی که درگذشته اعتقاد بر این بود که تغییرات شکل عمدتاً ناشی از عوامل ژنتیکی است، دانش امروز، نقش مهم تأثیرات محیطی در شکل‌دهی ریختی ماهیان را تصدیق می‌کند. مطالعات متعددی که رابطه بین شکل بدن و عوامل محیطی را بررسی می‌کنند، سازگاری با شرایط متفاوت را نشان داده‌اند که منجر به تغییرات در شکل بدن می‌شود. ماهی‌ها انعطاف‌پذیری درخور توجهی را در شکل بدن خود نشان می‌دهند که اغلب در پاسخ به تغییرات محیطی، رفتاری و فیزیولوژیکی ظاهر می‌شود (Mouludi-Saleh & Keivany, 2019).

در مطالعه‌ای که در منطقه جنوبی حوضه دریای خزر انجام شد، محققان دریافتند ویژگی‌های خاصی مانند اندازه سر، عمق بدن، وضعیت باله پشتی و طول باله دمی نقش مهمی در تمایز بین جمعیت‌های مختلف ماهی دارند (Mouludi-Saleh & Keivany, 2019). این تغییرات در صفات تحت تأثیر شرایط محیطی مشاهده شد. این مطالعه نشان داد این ویژگی‌های مورفولوژیکی خاص در پاسخ به عوامل محیطی خاص موجود در جمعیت‌های مربوطه دچار تغییراتی شدند.

مطالعه‌ای با استفاده از روش‌های ریخت‌سنجی هندسی بر جمعیت‌های کفال پوزه باریک در بخش جنوبی حوضه دریای خزر انجام شد (Abassi et al., 2023b). یافته‌های این مطالعه، تغییرات مورفولوژیکی چشمگیری را در بین گونه‌های مورد مطالعه نشان داد که تحت تأثیر زیستگاه‌های خاص آنها هستند. بارزترین تفاوت‌ها در عمق بدن، موقعیت دهان، اندازه سر و طول ساقه دمی مشاهده شد. شایان ذکر است جمعیت ساری و لنگرود بیشترین اندازه‌گیری عمق بدن را به نمایش گذاشتند. این تغییرات مورفولوژیکی را می‌توان به سازگاری درون‌گونه‌ای در پاسخ به شرایط محیطی و زیستگاه نسبت داد. تغییرات مشاهده‌شده که به حفظ تعادل در برابر نیروهای هیدرودینامیکی کمک می‌کند، پدیده‌ای رایج است که در زیستگاه‌های آبی گزارش شده است (Ghanbarifardi et al., 2014).

مطالعه‌ای که روی مورفولوژی جمعیت‌های سگ‌ماهیان جویباری در جنوب شرقی حوضه خزر با استفاده از روش ریخت‌سنجی هندسی انجام شد (Sharifinia & Mousavi, 2016)، نتایجی را نشان داد که نشان‌دهندۀ تغییرات شکل بدن مشخص در میان جمعیت‌های این جنس ماهی ساکن در زیستگاه‌های مختلف است. این تفاوت‌ها در شکل بدن را می‌توان به‌عنوان یک جدایی ریختی در نظر گرفت که بیان‌کنندۀ شرایط زیستگاهی خاص در جمعیت‌های سگ‌ماهیان حوضه دریای خزر است. این مطالعه همچنین نشان داد مهم‌ترین تغییرات در بین جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه مربوط به اندازه سر، ارتفاع بدن و موقعیت باله شکمی بود. این یافته‌ها تا حدودی با نتایج مطالعه ما نیز همخوانی دارد.

در مطالعه خود، گروهی از محققین از روش ریخت‌سنجی هندسی برای بررسی شکل بدن سه گونه از جنس Paracobitis استفاده کردند. محققان تفاوت‌های شایان توجهی را بین گونه‌ها ازنظر طول و عرض سر، عرض بدن، طول ساقه دمی، وضعیت چشم و موقعیت باله پشتی یافتند (Jafari et al., 2015). این یافته‌ها نشان می‌دهد شکل گونه‌های مورد مطالعه بسیار انعطاف‌پذیر بوده و تحت تأثیر عوامل محیطی است. اعتقاد بر این است که چنین انعطاف‌پذیری نتیجه سازگاری با شرایط محیطی خاص در زیستگاه آنها در طول فرآیند تکامل است.

تغییرات و تغییرات در شکل بدن موجودات، زمانی شایان توجه است که بتوان آنها را با جنبه‌های عملکردی و سازگاری مرتبط دانست. در اکوسیستم‌های آبی، این سازگاری‌ها اغلب با ضرورت جهت‌یابی مؤثر و مقابله با نیروهای هیدرودینامیکی به‌منظور حفظ انرژی در طی رفتارهای مختلف بیولوژیکی همراه است (Abassi et al., 2023b). تفاوت‌های ریختی مشاهده‌شده در میان جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه عمدتاً حول ویژگی‌های سر، ارتفاع بدن، طول ساقه دم و همچنین، موقعیت باله‌های پشتی بود. این تفاوت‌ها به‌طور بالقوه منعکس‌کننده سازگاری با شرایط هیدرولیک و ترجیحات غذایی خاص برای هر جمعیت است. با انجام این تغییرات ریختی، موجودات زنده می‌توانند عملکرد و بقای خود را در محیط‌های مربوطه خود بهتر بهینه کنند.

درواقع، تغییرات در شکل سر می‌تواند به‌طور غیرمستقیم منعکس‌کننده سازگاری‌های مربوط به رفتار جستجوی غذا باشد. تغییرات در شکل سر می‌تواند بر کارایی جستجو و تهیه غذا تأثیر بگذارد؛ برای مثال، وجود دهانی با موقعیت پایین در جمعیت‌های ارس ممکن است نشان‌دهنده این باشد که این ماهی‌ها از قسمت‌های عمیق‌تر ستون آب تغذیه می‌کنند (Hawkins & Quinn, 1996). علاوه بر این، ارتفاع پایین‌تر بدن مشاهده‌شده در جمعیت ارس نشان‌دهنده سازگاری با حمل‌شدن توسط جریان‌های آب است که با ساختار بدن کشیده‌تر و روان‌تر تسهیل می‌شود. این تغییرات شکل ماهی‌ها را قادر می‌سازد تا به‌طور مؤثرتری در زیستگاه خاص خود حرکت کنند و بازده جستجوی خود را در پاسخ به شرایط محیطی و نیروهای هیدرودینامیکی که با آن مواجه می‌شوند، بهینه کنند (Chapman et al., 2008).

مشخص شده است که موقعیت باله پشتی در ماهی‌های سریع شنا معمولاً خلفی است. این ویژگی به کاهش اصطکاک و بهبود راندمان شنا کمک می‌کند. دربارۀ جمعیت رودخانه ارس، وجود باله پشتی خلفی ممکن است به‌عنوان مکانیزمی برای جلوگیری از انتقال جریان قوی آب در رودخانه عمل کند. علاوه بر این، اندازه کوچک‌تر و شکل بدن دراز در ماهی‌هایی که در رودخانه‌هایی با جریان‌های بالاتر زندگی می‌کنند، سازگاری‌هایی است که توانایی آنها را برای حرکت در جریان آب افزایش می‌دهد (Douglas & Matthews, 1992). این سازگاری‌ها به کاهش کشش کمک می‌کند و به ماهی اجازه می‌دهد تا در شرایط چالش برانگیز هیدرودینامیک پایداری خود را حفظ کند. وجود باله سینه‌ای در جمعیت رودخانه ارس نیز ممکن است به افزایش قدرت مانور کمک کند و ماهی را قادر می‌سازد تا بهتر با جریان جهت‌دار آب کنار بیاید. این صفات ریختی مختلف درمجموع توانایی ماهی را برای رشد و بقا در محیط آبی خاص خود افزایش می‌دهد (Langerhans et al., 2003).

به‌طور کلی، به نظر می‌رسد ویژگی‌های زیستگاهی در کنار فاکتور جدایی جغرافیایی از عوامل تعیین‌کننده تغییرات تکاملی است که منجر به تغییر ویژگی‌های ریختی ماهیان ساکن در رودخانه ارس نسبت به سایر جمعیت‌ها شده است و در مطالعه‌ی مشابه که عطامولودی و یزدان کیوانی روی ریخت‌سنجی هندسی جمعیت‌های ماهی سفید رودخانه‌ای انجام دادند، این موضوع به اثبات رسیده است و همچنین، احتمالاً ایجاد سدهای متوالی در ارس که باعث جدایی ژنتیکی می‌شود، دلیلی برای تفاوت جمعیت ارس نسبت به سایر جمعیت‌ها است. حمید قاسمی و قارا مصطفی اف روی شناسایی ماهی‌ها و برخی از ویژگی‌های اکولوژیکی رودخانه ارس مطالعاتی انجام داده‌اند. از آنجایی که تعداد گونه A. hohenackeri در حوضه خزر کاملاً متفاوت بود، جمعیت‌ها با روش PCA صفات ریختی تقریباً با یکدیگر هم‌پوشانی داشته‌اند؛ اما جمعیت رودخانه ارس با دیگر جمعیت‌ها هیچ‌گونه هم‌پوشانی نداشته است و اختلاف معنی‌داری بین رودخانه ارس با سایرجمعیت‌ها دیده می‌شود. نکته شایان توجه این است که با روش CVA نیز همین نتایج به دست آمد و بیشترین تمایز را جمعیت ارس با سایر جمعیت‌ها داشت؛ اما در کل PCA و CVA نتوانستند جمعیت‌های مورد مطالعه را که دارای هم‌پوشانی بالایی بودند، از یکدیگر تفکیک کنند؛ به دلیل اینکه ویژگی آنها به هم نزدیک بوده است. همچنین، در آنالیز خوشه‌ای صفات ریختی حوضه خزر جمعیت رودخانه ارس به‌تنهایی در یک گروه قرار گرفته و از سایر جمعیت‌ها جدا شده بود و جمعیت‌های رودخانه لمیر، سرخرود، گرگانرود 1، گرگانرود 2، کپربردرود 1، کپربردرود 2، حاجی‌بکنده، گوهررود، شلمانرود، مزوبون و نور، به دلیل شباهت‌های شکل بدنی در یک گروه قرار می‌گیرند که بیان‌کنندۀ رابطه فاصله جغرافیایی و شکل بدن یا به عبارت دیگر، رابطه ژنتیکی نزدیک‌تر آنهاست (Mohadasi et al., 2013). با توجه به نتایج تفاوت‌های ریختی بین دوازده جمعیت مورد مطالعه از این حوضه جمعیت ارس به‌طور کامل از یازده جمعیت دیگر جدا شده است. جداشدن جمعیت رودخانه ارس از سایر رودخانه‌های حوضه خزر می‌تواند به ویژگی‌های رژیم غذایی مرتبط باشد؛ شکل بدن می‌تواند در موفقیت در تغذیه و اجتناب از شکارچی مؤثر باشد (Langerhans et al. 2003)؛ ازاین‌رو، تفاوت در شکل بدن احتمالاً مربوط به رفتار و نوع تغذیه است.
