| Butterflyfishes (family Chaetodontidae) comprise ecologically and morphologically diverse coral reef fishes, yet the extent of body shape variation among sympatric species in the northern Gulf of Oman remains poorly quantified. In this study, we used geometric morphometrics to evaluate body shape differences among three chaetodontid species, Heniochus acuminatus, Chaetodon nigropunctatus, and C. pictus collected from Chabahar Bay, Gulf of Oman, Iran. A total of 15 homologous landmarks were digitized from left-side photographs, and shape data were analyzed using Procrustes superimposition, principal component analysis (PCA), linear discriminant analysis (LDA) with leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV), and Procrustes ANOVA. The Procrustes ANOVA revealed significant interspecific shape differences. This divergence most clearly separated Heniochus acuminatus from Chaetodon pictus and C. nigropunctatus. Although principal component analysis provided only moderate separation, linear discriminant analysis achieved high discriminative power; nested leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) using LDA correctly classified 51 of 53 specimens (96.23% accuracy), with per-species classification accuracies of 93.75% for H. acuminatus, 100% for C. nigropunctatus, and 95.83% for C. pictus. Shape variation was primarily associated with differences in body depth, head proportions, snout morphology, and fin position, which is consistent with previously reported ecological differences among these species. These findings provide a quantitative morphological baseline for distinguishing sympatric chaetodontids in the region and highlight the utility of geometric morphometrics for species discrimination in coral reef fishes. | ||
