Identification and Structural-Causal Analysis of Individual Factors Affecting the Career Success Path of International Football Referees in Iran | ||

| چکیده | ||
| This study aimed to identify and structurally-causally analyze the individual factors affecting the career success of international football referees in Iran. An exploratory mixed-methods design was employed. The qualitative phase used narrative inquiry, while the quantitative phase utilized the DEMATEL technique. Participants included 23 international referees selected through purposive and snowball sampling based on experience, performance, and professional self-awareness. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews (qualitative) and an 8×8 DEMATEL pairwise comparison questionnaire (quantitative). Qualitative validity was ensured through member checking and triangulation; quantitative validity was confirmed via consistency rate and expert consensus. In the qualitative phase, eight key themes emerged: sustained passion, interest, and intrinsic motivation; perseverance, willpower, and resilience; clear goal-setting and positive ambition; self-belief and a positive mindset; courage and decisiveness in decision-making; intelligence and focus in game management; commitment to learning and receptiveness to criticism; and physical fitness with a professional lifestyle. Quantitative findings revealed that four factors—"intelligence and focus in game management," "courage and decisiveness in decision-making," "sustained interest and intrinsic motivation," and "physical fitness and professional lifestyle"—play a causal role, while the remaining four factors play an effect role.The findings indicate that the success of international referees results from the interaction of internal components within a cause-and-effect structure. This success is attainable only by strengthening cognitive, motivational, and psychological foundations—not merely through practice or experience. Accordingly, revising referee training and talent identification programs with a focus on internal development is essential. | ||
